Open Minds

In 2010, David Coogan returned to the Richmond City Jail to expand the original writing workshop into Open Minds, a college program sponsored by the Richmond City Sheriff’s Office and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Working with VCU professors Liz Canfield and Jon Waybright, Open Minds offers dual enrollment courses in English, Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, and Religious Studies that are held at the Richmond City Jail.

All students learn to dialogue respectfully and imaginatively about their shared humanity; to write creatively and analytically in search of common ground; and to link the liberal arts to personal experience in meaningful ways so that we may work together to build positive change.
